James Brunot Scrabble® Innovator

After Alfred M Butts’ creation of Scrabble, James Brunot innovative the board game and he played a pivotal role in bringing the game to a wider audience. Brunot, was an entrepreneur and game enthusiast.

It wasn’t until 1948, when James Brunot (1906–1984) acquired the rights to manufacture and distribute the game, that it was renamed “Scrabble.” Mr. Brunot and his wife, Helen, established a partnership called the Production and Marketing Company and commenced manufacturing Scrabble in their Newtown, Connecticut home that same year. They initially handcrafted each set in their home before expanding production.

Recognizing the game’s potential, Brunot and his wife refined the rules, developed a scoring system, and came up with the iconic tile distribution still used today. Brunot rearranged the premium squares, simplified the rules, and, most importantly, renamed the game “Scrabble”. He received the copyright on December 1 and the trademark on December 16, 1948. The current North American trademark holder is Hasbro.

Brunot’s innovations, including the iconic color scheme and the 50-point bonus for using all tiles, propelled Scrabble into households worldwide.

Brunot’s strategic marketing efforts led to the game’s popularity surge in the 1950s. According to legend, the surge in Scrabble’s popularity can be attributed to Jack “Mr. Jack” Straus. Mr. Jack joined the R. H. Macy company after graduating from Harvard in 1921 and he became a vice president in 1933, acting president in 1939 and president as well as chief executive in 1940. In 1956 Jack Straus became chairman, and from 1968 to 1976 he was chairman of the executive committee. While on vacation, Straus reportedly discovered the Scrabble game and recognized its potential, leading him to stock Macy’s stores with it which sparked a remarkable increase in sales. This temporarily overwhelmed manufacturing who struggled to keep up with the high demand.

The game was a runaway success, with millions of sets sold annually.

In 1952, the basic game rights were licensed to Selchow & Righter, a company founded in 1867, with Brunot retaining the rights to the Deluxe version. Selchow and Righter discovered Scrabble at a trade show and decided to purchase the rights to manufacture and distribute it. They launched a marketing campaign that included national tournaments and endorsements from celebrities, which significantly boosted Scrabble’s popularity and sales. This successful rebranding and marketing effort transformed Scrabble into a household name and solidified its place in the gaming industry.

During the 1980s, the board game industry experienced significant growth, leading to the development of the first digital version of Scrabble in that era.

Selchow & Righter continued to produce Scrabble until it was acquired by Coleco Industries in 1986. Subsequently, Hasbro acquired the rights to Scrabble and currently manufactures the game in the United States and Canada through its subsidiaries, Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers. Outside of these regions, Mattel is responsible for Scrabble game production.

Scrabble, one of the world’s best-loved word games, is to get a new “collaborative” and “accessible” version. Mattel launches new, less ‘intimidating’ ‘less competitive’ version of Scrabble.

Ahead of National Scrabble Day, April 13th, Mattel unveiled ‘Scrabble Together’ adding a second side to the classic Scrabble gameboard to make “gameplay more accessible for anyone who finds word games intimidating,” the company said.

Scrabble Together, now available in Europe, is the first major update to the game in more than 75 years in a news release. Scrabble gets a facelift to cater for younger generations, says 22 words.

Ray Adler, Vice President, Global Head of Games, Mattel,said: “Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players. For anyone who’s ever thought, “word games aren’t for me”, or felt a little intimidated by the Classic game, Scrabble Together Mode is an ideal option. With team based and faster gameplay, Scrabble Together Mode continues to celebrate the wonder of words just as the Classic version does, but thanks to its exciting new co-operative and dynamic gameplay, it’s more accessible and brings people together. Players who prefer the classic version will continue to have the classic board game.”
